Onyx greeted Marnie back at The Diana, rubbing up against her leg. She took the hint and filled the cat’s empty food and water bowls. The creamy sweetness of sandalwood no longer drifted from Willow’s office. Neither was there a sign of her car out back or a note on the whiteboard.

When Marnie was younger, being alone in her family’s old farmhouse sometimes frightened her. She wasn’t scared now, though. At least that was what she told herself.

She foraged through the kitchen and settled on making an omelet, moving mechanically. After dinner, the evening sun seeped through the bedroom windows, showcasing the dust mites that hung in the air. She felt alone. Worse. She was lonely.

Drawing the shades, she climbed into bed, wondering where Willow had gone. The woman had shelled herself like a turtle and then left without a word. Much like the spirits, come to think of it. Ironic, but part of Marnie longed to breathe in the familiar cinnamon scents of Roxy and CeCe. For better or worse, their presence would at least have filled up this vacuum.

She didn’t try to conjure them. Instead she called Lee.

Marnie had asked him to call her to let her know he’d arrived home from Denver safely. He hadn’t called. Fine. She supposed it was his turn to be the passive-aggressive one. She punched in his number and pursed her lips as his phone went straight to voicemail.

She didn’t leave a message.

Lying in the dark, she tossed on the bed for a bit. Then she found a short story podcast on her phone and set her timer to end it in fifteen minutes. She turned off the light, got comfortable in the quiet, and let the voice of the reader lull her to sleep.
